Who are the Best Athletes On The Planet?

Welcome the jungle!

Without question, the best athletes on the planet are, you guessed it, wild animals. Think about a cheetah sprinting at 70 miles an hour to catch a gazele.  Remember Shark Week when we all saw a great white shark surging it's entire 1-2 tons of mass straight out of the water with a chubby seal in it's jaws? Ever seen a jaguar haul an animal nearly twice its body weight up a tree! You get the point. Wild animals are bad ass. Ok, but what about humans?

Looking For A Healthy Version of Your Favorite NOLA Foods?

Looking For A Healthy Version of Your Favorite NOLA Foods?

New Orleans is full of sweet, savory, succulent and picante food options. The cuisine here is unlike any other and if you’re in town for business or pleasure you would be a fool to miss some of the best eats in town. That being said, after two or three days of indulging in too much butter, sugar, salt and Tabasco your body is likely going to start giving you subtle (or not so subtle) hints that things are going to be very bad if you don't eat something a bit lighter and healthier. Enter, Meals from the Heart Cafe. A fresh, healthy respite amidst all the naughty food that is NOLA. Started by Chef Marilyn Doucette, Meals from the Heart Cafe has a fantastic location is the Historic French Market. Saddle up to the counter and enjoy some fresh, local and healthy food made with tons of love.

Need A Break From NOLA's Cuisine?

Need A Break From NOLA's Cuisine?

We love the food in New Orleans, but there are only so many po' boys and bowls of gumbo one can consume before things start to expand, literally. Finding a decent meal in the Big Easy if you are gluten free, a vegan or vegetarian is a real challenge. Although most restaurants claim to cater to these diets, you'll likely be served iceberg lettuce topped with carrot shavings and doused in oil and vinegar.

Understanding the problem firsthand, The Sweat Social team has been on the hunt to find you delicious, nutritiously balanced gluten free, vegetarian and vegan options in New Orleans.

5 Tips to Enjoy New Orleans without Gaining 5 pounds

5 Tips to Enjoy New Orleans without Gaining 5 pounds

So, you're planning a trip to the Big Easy? Amazing choice! This city has something special for everyone and is truly one of a kind. There is so much fun to be had, culture to soak in and delicious cuisine to try. Caution: if you don't want to go back home as a larger version of yourself, check out the tips to avoid gaining 5 pounds on your trip. I call this phenomenon the dreaded "Nola 5."

5 Tips to Avoid the "NOLA 5"

1. Limit yourself and indulge in one special meal per day. This is hard, there is so much sinfully delightful food here. Plan where you are going to eat before you arrive and you will be more disciplined and look forward to those few restaurants you've been dying to try. I suggest Commander's Palace or Muriel's for a special meal. And walk there and back...Actually, walk everywhere.

Ever Get Nervous Before A Workout?

Ever Get Nervous Before A Workout?

If you ever get nervous before a workout, you are not alone. May people fixate their minds on the impeding struggle and pain to get through their next tough workout. Sometimes nerves can be good, but the last thing you want is to be on the mental fritz before every workout. Here are a couple tips to ease the nerves.

  1. Don't worry about the outcome, instead focus on the purpose and stay in the moment. Don't worry about beating your personal record, just worry about doing as well as you can on the way to the finish line.
  2. Stay positive, nerves before a workout means that you are taking it seriously and want to see the benefit. That's a good thing though sometimes it can be confused with anxiety when it's really excitement. Keep your mind on the positive, you are doing a workout, that's an amazing thing.

The Science Behind High Intensity Interval Training

The Science Behind High Intensity Interval Training

HIIT training is the new kid on the fitness block, but like most effective training routines, it's been around forever. It's tried, tested and proven and is clearly distinguishing itself from the rest of the pack as a time saving, highly results oriented method of training. Olympic sprinters, gymnasts, football players, dancers and countless other athletic disciplines leverage HIIT or some derivation thereof. With the blessings from the fitness Gods, high intensity interval training has turned into one of the most effective and sought after training techniques today. The science behind the jaw dropping results achieved in half the time of other training methods is complex, but here are the highlights you should know:

Chocolate Milk For Post Workout Recovery

Chocolate Milk For Post Workout Recovery

After a HIIT workout, your body has depleted the fuel in your cells required to function. Your body needs amino acids to repair muscle tissues and carbohydrates to restore glycogen.  Therefore, within 30-60 minutes of an intense workout, you should eat some protein and carbs to replenish your cells.  Otherwise, your body will start eating itself, beginning the feast with your precious lean muscle!

Enter chocolate milk.

Tips to Fit In A Workout During Your Conference

Tips to Fit In A Workout During Your Conference

Getting in a workout when you are traveling for a conference or work event can be tough. Many hotels do not have gym facilities and the ones that do often charge a fee and are as stale as those 8 Minute Abs VHS tapes. The food at these events is decent, but usually very heavy. What's worse is that you are likely sitting down all day and when you get a break you are hard pressed not to hit the snack bar stacked high with candy, pastries, and other fried sugary substances. Then comes dinner and drinks.

Pearl Wine Co: Part Liquor Store/Part Bar

Pearl Wine Co: Part Liquor Store/Part Bar

On a recent adventure to find a place to call home in New Orleans, our wonderful real estate broker suggested that we needed to stop for a drink. Where he would stop would cause a love at first sight reaction from the team at The Sweat Social and numerous subsequent visits. Nestled near beautiful City Park and Bayou St. John (home to oldest grove of mature weeping oak trees in the world) lives the Pearl Wine Co. Started by Leora Pearl, the establishment is part wine/liquor store, part bar in an amazing combination that works beautifully.

Few tourists and many a local know of the amazing food coming out of the unassuming Verti Marte in New Orleans. Part grocery store and part delicatessen, the Verti Marte is a legend amongst locals who frequent the eatery for "hit the spot" comfort food usually while inebriated or shortly thereafter. This popular drunken munchie/post hangover eatery cranks out some of the best sandwiches and southern food around.

Walk out of the historic French Quarter and enter the Central Business District (CBD) continuing to 130 Roosevelt Way. Stroll into the majestic Roosevelt, take in a deep breath to let it all sink in, and continue on your journey to the Sazerac Bar within the Hotel.

Our Story

Our Story

It all started with frustration and a love of fitness and travel. Let's start with frustration. I'm talking about the dark reality that sets in when when you realize you can no longer eat, drink and party the nights away without severe consequences (primarily an ever expanding waistline and epic hangovers). It gets especially challenging when you travel, something we learned after spending 1 year traveling through Asia. So you can deprive yourself of life's great pleasures and be deeply depressed as life goes on, or you can try something different. We choose different.
