If you ever get nervous before a workout, you are not alone. May people fixate their minds on the impeding struggle and pain to get through their next tough workout. Sometimes nerves can be good, but the last thing you want is to be on the mental fritz before every workout. Here are a couple tips to ease the nerves.
- Don't worry about the outcome, instead focus on the purpose and stay in the moment. Don't worry about beating your personal record, just worry about doing as well as you can on the way to the finish line.
- Stay positive, nerves before a workout means that you are taking it seriously and want to see the benefit. That's a good thing though sometimes it can be confused with anxiety when it's really excitement. Keep your mind on the positive, you are doing a workout, that's an amazing thing.
- Compartmentalize your thoughts. Limit thinking about your workout to 30 minutes before and no more than that. This takes some practice.
- Try not to take it too seriously. Many top athletes suffer from competition anxiety, but that's a very different issue. So if there are no NFL contracts on the line, try and relax a bit and enjoy your training.
