Christmas Calorie Burn: Shop 'Til You Drop (The Pounds)

With Christmas only a few days away, many people are getting in that last minute shopping spree, buying for grandma, niece, uncle, and everyone in between. Finding that perfect gift can be hard work… much harder than you think. In fact, it can be so hard, you may burn a whole days worth of calories! Christmas shopping, with all of the rushing and pushing through the throngs of people downtown, can be a major workout, and can actually be a great way to burn off some of those holiday treats. Check out all of the ways you can maximize the burn of your Christmas calories without even having to think about it!

1. Split it into a two-day trip.

If you have the time, splitting your Christmas shopping up over two days can reduce your stress, as well as burn more calories over time. A 3-hour shopping trip can make up for a workout, burning anywhere from 500-800 calories, depending on your level of determination to get to the last sweater on the rack before that other lady.

2. Walk back to your car after every purchase.

Okay, so this might sound inconvenient, but it can help you burn twice the calories. Those extra trips back to the car will keep the weight off your back, and get in some added cardio. But if you do decide to carry those bags around all day, the added weight will maximize your strength and leave you with some sore arms. Just make sure you aren’t putting yourself under too much strain.

3. Take the stairs.

Whether you’re in a multi-level store, or you parked on the fifth floor of the parking garage, take the stairs all day. You’ll feel it in your hamstrings and glutes the next day, especially if you’re lugging around toys, shoes, and dolls.

4. Leave some money in the Christmas budget for yourself.

Christmas shopping can seem like a petty task sometimes, especially when you leave it to the last minute. Wanting to get in and get out is normal, but make sure to treat yourself a little bit. Knowing that you’ll be getting something out of it as well will keep you going and keep you excited about the whole process. Just make sure to leave that part to the end.

Bonus (!): Go ice skating!

If your downtown area has an ice rink, lace up those boots and get skating! 30 minutes of ice skating can burn around 200 calories, and let’s be honest, it will bring you back to your childhood and make you feel more Christmasy than ever.

Getting all that Christmas shopping out of the way is always a great feeling, especially when you know you've done something great for your body without even trying. So all you Christmas procrastinators - get out there and get shopping! Your family will thank you, and so will your body.
